Ten must see(n) movies from the 10’s

I love lists. So here is my favorite list with the movies from the last 10 years.
Since I’m a big fan of Viggo Mortensen these movies can’t miss;

Captain Fantastic (2016) and The Green Book (2018).

The first one is about a family who lives in the wild and teach the children by exploring and practise.
But at a certain point they need to go back to society which gives very interesting and funny situations.

Green Book is a beautiful story, based on a true one. It goes back to the ’60 and there’s this black piano player who is looking for a driver, for his tour. Tony (Viggo Mortensen) is an Italian from the Bronx, very straightforward. Which gives a wonderful encounter with Dokter Donald Shirley (played by Mahershala Ali (House of Cards)).

Her (2013)

This film is written and directed by Spike Jonze. A genius when it comes to storytelling. The main character is Theodore (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and he builds a relationship with his personal assistant in his phone. Thinking about it, it sounds ridiculous. But with the voice of Scarlett Johansson it all makes sense. And last but not least the shots are made by a Dutch DOP, Hoyte van Hoytema (know for Interstellar, Dunkirk and Spectre).. He makes this really beautiful slow shots with a really nice ambiance in it.

The Tree of Life (2011)

A very unusual Hollywood production. With a great cast and beautiful cinematography absolutely a must seen.
For some the story might be a little slow or weird, but if you embrace that, there is a lot of small detail and refined filmmaking in the movie.
To me the most special are those shots of the kids playing around with their silly games. It also makes you aware of how much the world actually changed the last 50 years.

Interstellar (2014)

Another film shot by Hoyte van Hoytema. The silence scenes in space with the very subtle sounds from the soundtrack, made by Hans Zimmer. With so many masterminds it hardly can’t go wrong. Christopher Nolan has a perfect sense of finding the right actors for the specific roles. Sure you will love this movie, even when you’re not into the space kind of movies. Last 10 years it seemed like every hollywood star had a space movie on it’s bucket list. Interstellar is by far my favorite.

Parasite (2019)

Such a surprise. The story; ridiculous, very funny and frightening. I can’t think of likewise movie. Which is a big compliment. It is the first not English spoken movie winning the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Just watch it!

La La Land (2016)

This was after (or before) A Star is Born also a big surprise to me. I’m generally not a big musical fan. But somehow In La La Land everything comes together perfectly. The sceneries from the eighties, the piano music, the beautiful shots from Linus Sandgren (DOP). And I was already a big fan of Ryan Gosling and he really made it happen again. Easy, funny, enjoyable and of course some drama.

Creed I & II (2015 & 2018)

Actually I would have loved to list Rocky here… (characteristic, touching, endurance, sweet love and epic), but Creed has the same ingredients with a little bit more Hollywood vibe. Which is fine with me.

Wadjda (2013)

A very cool movie about the big cultural differences and on the other hand the similar desire of kids (or humans in general). With beautiful composed music by Max Richter.

A Star is Born (2018)

At first I heard many people in the fashion/photography business talking about this movie. Mostly women, and then I was like yeah… probably another drama story. But then I checked it on IMDb and it got rated above an eight, which made me curious. I wasn’t a fan of Lady Gaga either, but then I thought, let’s give it a shot. And to be honest, I was blown away. Her voice is amazing and the way she naturally acts is fantastic. She is the perfect girl for these script. Bradley Cooper did amazing as a actor and director. If you haven’t watched it, I hope my enthousiasme doesn’t set the expectations too high. But for sure if you like movies and music you should check out this one.

And of course there are many more titles to (re)watch;
